AUM (Om) represents the ultimate reality and is a sacred sound. It is the central and most potent symbol of Hinduism. It is very often chanted in the beginning and the end of prayers. The chant of AUM is very peaceful and calming. Many of the Vedic mantras begin with Om.

The ancient sages heard a sound vibrating in their meditation. This sound was that of AUM. It represents the trinity of Gods: A (Brahma), U (Vishnu) and M (Mahesh or Shiva). AUM is said to be eternal, without beginning or end. It is said that creation began after AUM was chanted. Hence, chanting of AUM is auspicious before undertaking any task.

AUM was first mentioned in the ancient Hindu texts called Upanishads. In the Mandukya Upanishad it is explained that AUM is imperishable. It represents the entire universe. Those who concentrate on it will be unafraid. It is associated with liberation. In the Katha Upanishad, Nachiketa, a young boy, meets Yama, the Lord of Death. Yama tells Nachiketa that Om is the mother of all sounds. It is the syllable of the supreme Brahman. Among other things, Yama explains that whoever meditates on AUM obtains knowledge of that thing that is the source of creation and into which we return after death. It activates every single nerve center in one’s body. When it is chanted with sincerity, it can bring one in contact with their divinity and true nature. AUM the goal of spiritualists and the essence of the Vedas.

In the Bhagavad Gita also, the importance of AUM (Om) is mentioned. The Lord mentions that He is the object of knowledge, the purifier and the syllable Om. [9/17] It is said that if a person departs the world remembering the Supreme Lord and chanting Om, they will reach the supreme goal [8/13]. It is also mentioned that when performing sacrifice, giving charity or doing penance, those who study the Vedas utter Om to attain the Supreme [17/24].

Science has also confirmed what our sages knew about the healing power of AUM. In addition to stress reduction, it helps in focused concentration and improved mood. It promotes relaxation and calmness. AUM chanting promotes overall well-being by stimulating various parts of the body. It raises our vibration and destroys negativity and inner conflicts. It helps us attract a better future.

AUM can ultimately guide us in our spiritual journey and is a powerful tool for self-realization. One can feel closely connected with the divine. It also fosters interconnectedness by connecting us to the original source energy. Through regular chanting of AUM, we can experience all good things in life and experience profound happiness, bliss and peace.
