Principles Of Spirituality 2

Spiritual Family

September 29, 2020 Uncategorizedprinciples of spirituality

The spiritual family is among the most precious of the many gifts he has given to me. This is a story about what it has meant to me and how valuable a thing it is, about how the Guru Consciousness is expressed within the spiritual family and how it is one of the arenas in which he works.

The scriptures list satsaṅga as the prime requisite for the evolution of consciousness. Mohanji defines satsaṅga as ‘Good Company’. It means being with people who are positive in outlook, who uplift you, help you along your way as you walk your path.

What does this mean to me? It is those with whom I am united in purpose. Here our purpose is liberation. Liberation from anything binding: from heavy emotions which weigh us down, concepts of ourselves as constricted, incomplete beings, habit and ultimately from the relentless cycle of birth and death. But that is only part of the picture. It also means those with whom I am united in love. This is where a good company becomes a family. In the 9 years that I have known my Guru, his expression has been consistently loving. The same love for friends, parents, spouse and child., the same for disciple and for stranger. If we consider our Guru to be our spiritual Father/Mother then we should also know that we are but 1 among many such adopted children and the measure of our collective quality,  as a family, is how unconditionally loving we are, after the example of our Guru.

Being a flawed man; I have deviated from my guru’s instructions, neglected essential disciplines and left important tasks undone.

I have allowed fear and doubt to enter my mind. Doubts about my destination and my path and worst of all: self-doubt which is just as much of a mistake as doubting the Guru is, as it hinders or even blocks the energy and flow between us.

Mohanji has promised not to let me fall, but I have stumbled and whenever he wasn’t there in person to catch and save me, he has been there in the form of an emissary, in the form of the spiritual family. How do I know this? By the fact that the messages are simply too apropos, too specific, too personal and too well informed to be mistaken as anything other than guidance from the Master. I see in the messenger a gesture of the hand or eye just like the Master’s or I hear his grammatical idiosyncrasies in their speech and then I know where the message is coming from.

When they come so, they are the assurance of the Guru’s presence.

When they speak so, they are the Guru’s mouth.

There was a time when I would have been homeless and hungry, but for the fact that the spiritual family fed, housed and employed me.

When they give so, they are the Guru’s generous hands.

When I needed a good push or a good scolding; that too was forthcoming.

When the family speaks strongly, they are the Guru’s rod.

When I was in conflict with myself and my confidence at its lowest, when I could not stand my own company and so could not imagine someone else wanting my company; I’d get a call from someone in the family, someone calling just to say hello, perhaps to invite to participate in meditation or in some charity work.

When they call, they are the Guru’s assurance that I am appreciated and accepted even if I do not accept myself.

When I was complacent or unobservant, someone would enter my life who reflects my own flaws back at me.

When they come, they are the Guru’s mirror, to bring my awareness to those parts of me.

When I feel it too difficult a task for me, to be totally receptive and non-resistant; amenable to Mohanji’s transformative touch; he furnished me with examples of 1st rate disciples; living embodiments of devotion, surrender and humility. Who live moment by moment in his consciousness and whose presence is no different from his own, as a way of bringing my awareness to the possibility of truly deep and intense connectivity to his Consciousness.

When they come so, they are simply his true disciples.

There have been times when help and guidance were offered to me via the spiritual and I refused it, thinking that it should be necessary to have an intermediary between my Guru and I, or I refused because I found being in a position of needing help to be humiliating.

When help they offered so to help, they were the Guru’s grace!! My refusal meant that I had missed out.

You are where you belong if you are surrounded by these kinds of people. If you are not, don’t stick around, it is better to be alone. Treasure your spiritual family and be a treasure to them.

My deepest gratitude goes to all those who have touched me in this way. I wish you all liberated, loving blissful lives and may you ever remain instruments in the hands of the divine.

These words are surrendered to my Guru, Mohanji. May the good seeds he has sown grow deep roots and bear fruit in plenty for all.

Basic Principles of Spirituality for Rapid Spiritual Progress

April 15, 2015 Consciousnessprinciples of spirituality, spiritual progress, spirituality

Rapid spiritual progress can be achieved when we do spiritual practice according to the basic principles of Spirituality. Even though there are many different types of spiritual practice, whether our spiritual practice adheres to the basic principles of Spirituality is a true litmus test for its effectiveness. If not, we run the risk of putting in a lot of effort but not seeing the results that match that effort.

The six basic principles of spiritual practice are

  1. There are as many paths to God as there are people

  2. Going from many to one

  3. Progressing from gross (tangible) to subtle (intangible)

  4. Undertaking spiritual practice as per the spiritual level or spiritual capacity

  5. Doing spiritual practice relevant to the times

  6. Offering to God as per your talent or capacity
