In spite of the steady rise in holidays and retreats offering mindfulness, meditation and various types of spas, there are some places in the world where just quietly sitting could provide the greatest balm to a seeker’s soul.

There are places in the world, spiritual places, where sensitive people report dreaming about strange things after spending the night there, where you can feel the connection with the divine, sites that raise our energy and vibration to a higher spiritual level. These places have the power to seep into our energy, regardless of the faith or feeling you might bring to them. And you may find your salvation or contentedness at either joining the hordes at a Kumbh Mela in India to pray and bathe in the holy Ganga and gain comfort from the presence of thousands of like-minded souls or in escaping the crowds, communing with nature in Canada’s peaceful Haida Gwaii archipelago filled with First Nations mythology. No matter where one travels, one finds that mankind has its own ways of interpreting this wonderful world of ours. When we travel we experience these interpretations first-hand, being afforded the chance to explore the sometimes hostile, often spectacular environments, beginning to gain a glimmer of understanding about those who believe, and often find something beautiful, learn a little, connect with the surroundings and, maybe, even find a little inner peace.

A place of high-vibrational energy or a Cosmo-telluric vibrational site is a privileged place where one can contact the positive vibrations emanating from the Cosmos and the Earth at the same time. The art of using nature energies to boost one’s spiritual powers isn’t new. In fact, many ancient civilisations located these portals of tremendous energy through geomancy or some form of earth divination, such as throwing a handful of soil or pebbles onto the ground and then interpreting the pattern they form. Some techniques only read and understand existing ground patterns while others use dowsing rods to locate underground springs, streams and rivers. Besides, astronomy was used in making the final decision of location for a monument. These could be simple medicine wheels or magnificent temples, pyramids, standing stones and other structures that were designed to be used strictly for spiritual practices and rituals.

Erecting a spiritual structure over an energy vortex was believed to allow practitioners a facility where they could easily tap into the spiral energy emanating from the earth. This energy was often found by tracing the intersections of the ley line system. The overlapping of these lines can also create powerful energy points or vortexes. The summer and winter solstices were also crucial for placing such monuments and their relationship to the sun rising and setting.

So the next time you travel, choose from these 10 places and recharge your internal power!

1. Rila, Bulgaria This mountain range is one of the energy centers of the world and it is no accident that one of the greatest spiritual masters of the XX century – Beinsa Duno is Bulgarian and has chosen to transmit wisdom in Rila. The area around Rila’s Lakes actually has very strong energy and more sensitive people feel it and receive strange dreams when they stay in the area. Location is as important as the lesson in spirituality because where energy is high it becomes easier for people to absorb the spiritual lessons being transmitted. Besides the energy field, this place is also known for its scenic beauty. The area is home to snow capped peaks, lush meadows, serene blue lake, colourful flowers and trees that seem to touch the sky among other things.

Quartz is a natural healing crystal used in many holistic practices. Another benefit is visiting the Intihuatana Stone, also called Saywa stone. This ancient wonder is said to mark the solstices and joining of the sun and the two equinoxes. Every winter and summer solstice the sun shines directly over the monument at high noon. Shamanic legend says that if you put your forehead on the stone you will receive enlightenment and and become open to the spiritual world. Last, but not least, taking a dip in the natural hot springs at Machu Picchu will serve powerful benefits to the body.  The composition and temperature of the water aides in high blood pressure, arthritis, increased oxygen in blood, skin healing, total relaxation.

4. The Uluru Plateau, Australia Located in the center of the continental country, Uluru is the spiritual center of Australia and is considered sacred to the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people. These people of the land are the traditional owners and guardians of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. This special place carries great spiritual and cultural significance for these local indigenous tribes with over 40 sacred aboriginal sites and eleven Tjurkurpa or Dreaming trails present in the area. The Anangu people belong to the oldest culture known to man dating back 60,000 years. They believe that their culture has always existed in Central Australia and that this landscape was created at the beginning of time by the travels of great ancestral beings. Uluru and Kata Tjuta are said to provide physical evidence of these ancient events and have been used for traditional ceremonies and rites of passage for over 10,000 years. Legends say that the plateau itself is hollow and it is an energy source, which they call Tiukurpa (Dreamtime). Ancient tribes surrounding the plateau have left many stories from the “Dreamtime” painted in some of the caves in the area. In the tribes has remained the belief that when a person goes around the plateau, he gets spiritual visions.

5. The Easter Island or Rapa Nui, has more than 300 megalithic platforms, each of which might have been made by a separate community. The first of these are believed to have been constructed in the 13th century, and many are found around the coast. The huge stone figures of Easter Island have beguiled explorers, researchers and the wider world for centuries, but now experts say they have cracked one of the biggest mysteries: why the statues are where they are. Researchers say they have analysed the locations of the megalithic platforms, or ahu, on which many of the statues known as moai sit, as well as scrutinising sites of the island’s resources, and have discovered the structures are typically found close to sources of fresh water. It is thought the monuments represent ancestors and were linked to ritual activity, forming a focal point for communities. There are some 250 of these ahu platforms spaced approximately one half mile apart and creating an almost unbroken line around the perimeter of the island. Another 600 moai statues, in various stages of completion, are scattered around the island, either in quarries or along ancient roads between the quarries and the coastal areas where the statues were most often erected. Nearly all the moai are carved from the tough stone of the Rano Raraku volcano. The average statue is 14 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 14 tons. Archaeological and iconographic analysis indicates that the statue cult was based on an ideology of male, lineage-based authority incorporating anthropomorphic symbolism. The statues were thus symbols of authority and power, both religious and political. But they were not only symbols. To the people who erected and used them, they were actual repositories of sacred spirit. Carved stone and wooden objects in ancient Polynesian religions, when properly fashioned and ritually prepared, were believed to be charged by a magical spiritual essence called mana. The ahu platforms of Easter Island were the sanctuaries of the people of Rapa Nui, and the moai statues were the ritually charged sacred objects of those sanctuaries. While the statues have been toppled and re-erected over the centuries, the mana or spiritual presence of Rapa Nui is still strongly present at the ahu sites and atop the sacred volcanoes.

It is known that the enormous flat rock was used by the Thracians as a sanctuary to the gods and even today you can see the stairs cut in the rock and the channels where the doors of an ancient temple used to be locked.

7. Berat, Albania is one of the oldest towns in the region, founded back in the ancient ages. After some troublesome history and changes of the name the city was finally called “Beligrad” – “The White City” (the current name is just the derivative of it). It’s pretty obvious where it comes from as the Old Town of Berat is full of white houses, all of them facing the river (hence another name – “the city of thousands windows”). The number of monuments and interesting places and things to do in Berat is outstanding- there’re mosques, narrow cobbled streets and the fortress – Berat castle – dating back to the Middle Ages. Berat presents a wonderful combination of eastern and western culture, traditions, and customs. The town is a treasury of Albanian history and is evidence of the harmony between religion and culture. In Berat, people experience very powerful, spiritual healing energy. In the III century, the city became “the city- castle”. Today, behind the city walls are still living people, who don’t believe in disease, that make this place unique and authentic. No wonder Berat made it to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008!

8. Stonehenge is the most famous megalithic monument in the world, probably dedicated to the Sun, with an ancient necropolis. Located in the middle of Salisbury Plains in the county of Wiltshire, UK, the site probably functioned as an astronomical observatory in connection with cults and economic performance of the agricultural population. It is constructed from the monolithic slabs and pillars, forming concentric circles. Stonehenge has stood upon Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire as a silent testimony to a past civilisation long forgotten. Archaeologists believe they have determined when the gigantic stone circle was constructed, but why it was built still remains a mystery. Stonehenge like many other power places emits energy. Humankind has always revered springs intuitively understanding that the water has healing properties and curative powers. Invariably, ancient power centres, such as Avebury Henge and Stonehenge were associated with springs. Our ancient ancestors recognized its harmonic energy emissions and sited stone circles, pyramids, holy temples and constructs above it and no doubt harnessed the energy.

They include the Pyramids of the Sun, Moon, Love, Dragon and are believed to be connected by a labyrinth of underground tunnels running under the Visoko Valley of the Pyramids called Ravne. Radio-carbon analyses conducted by the University of Shlyonsk / Poland, 2011 / date this pyramids before 12,350 years (plus/minus 50 years), making the Bosnian pyramidal structures thousands of years older than the Egyptian pyramids. Under the pyramid were found three underground rooms and a little blue lake. The water in the lake is sterile clean water, with no bacteria, algae, fungi, microorganisms, animals, or moss and mud. They call it living water because it purifies the body.  The tunnels within the Pyramids Complex serve as “healing rooms”. The Pyramids are alive, vibrant, full of energy and hold incredible Ancient Wisdom, Light Codes and Healing Properties.

10. Mt Kailash, Tibet Ancient Vedic and Tantra scriptures speak of a divine place from where the universe sprang forth radiating the creative bliss of the Ultimate Reality. It acts as the centre of the universe and the source from which everything emanates and finally returns. It is called the legendary Mt. Meru, the sight of which washes away all sins and protects one from the negative and demonical forces, and from ignorance and delusions.  Mount Kailash is considered to be the final pilgrimage destination in the Himalayas by at least four major religions; Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Bonpa Tibetans.

Mt. Kailash is the abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati and is a pyramid-shaped mountain that is considered as old as creation. It is said to be made of precious stones and divine material and has a strong magnetic attraction radiating immense spiritual energy. It is here that Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati performed the Ananda Tandava – the Dance of Bliss that created the first Spanda – throb of cosmic creation. The mountain itself represents Sat-Cit-Ananda, the principle of Truth, Consciousness and Bliss. It is from Mt Kailash that Aum the primordial sound emanates from the anklets of Mother Parvati and brings about the Universe in its various forms as the Nada (vibrations) spreads out. Every object in this area is sacred and related to many of the legends and mythical stories from ancient scriptures and oral traditions.

In Buddhism also Kailash and Manasarovar hold special significance. Mt. Kailash is called Kang Rinpoche in Buddhism (the precious jewel snow peak), and is the abode of Chakra Samvara and Guru Rinpoche Padma Sambhava, who brought Buddhism to Tibet and beyond. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is believed that Mt Kailash is the dwelling place of Chakra Samvara Demchog (the Wheel of Bliss) and his consort, Dorje Phagmo. It is also revered as the abode of one of the great Tibetan yogi, Milarepa. It is in Manasarovar that Lord Buddha’s mother, Queen Maya, was transported for a bath before he was conceived. Buddhist pilgrims traverse clockwise around the mountain, and it is called Kora. In Jainism, Kailash has a special significance as their first Tirthankar, and founder of the Jain faith, Rishabh Dev performed his severe penance here to attain Nirvana. In Tibet’s pre-Buddhist, Shamanic Bon religion, Mt Kailash is the abode of Sky Goddess Sipaimen and is in the form of a giant Mandala that is the central point of all Tantra Rituals and Forces. The founder of Bon Religion, Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche is believed to live on Mt Kailash, which is considered as nine- storey Swastika Mountain, and the axis mundi, the central pillar of the world. The Bonpo Pilgrims walk counter-clockwise around the Mt Kailash.
